Welcome to the
German Horse Museum

The German Museum of Local History began in 1930 with the setting-up of a department devoted to the theme „Horse“, which becomes the name “Horse-Museum”. The founders were the master-metalworker and museums director Wilhelm Ahrens and the hippologist Erich Clausen, who in a honorary function directed the museum until his death in 1969.

Erich Clausen’s successor is Hans Joachim Köhler. He is the founder of the Verden (horse) auctions and well known as an excellent horse expert and an author of hippological books.

It was soon realised that because of its large collection and in order to give due regard to the various themes, the museum needed to be enlarged to cover all the different breeding areas in Germany. Experience showed the necessity to set up a centre for the history of the horse in Germany. However, during the war years other things were more important for the population.

In 1965, the central and independent “Deutsche Pferdemuseum” (“German Horse Museum”) was established. Now it was possible to present the museum’s large collection in two historical buildings:
the museum in the Andreasstraße and the hippological Library in the Strukturstraße.

In the year 2000 the “Deutsche Pferdemuseum” moved to its present position – the former Cavalry Barracks in the “Holzmarkt”. Now the museum, the hippological library and the historic-photograph archives are combined under one roof.
